Chapter 5 in Unmasking Financial Psychopaths, 2014, pp 79-91 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In the previous chapter we traced the evolution of money, markets, and financial theories and observed that all three have transformed over time and at an accelerated rate since the mid-twentieth century. The reconstruction of the world economy after the Second World War provided the impetus for a new kind of money that was intertwined with subsequent shifts in markets and financial theories and driven by changes in technology. Behind all these movements stand the humans who effected the change and in turn are affected by the outcomes of their actions. In this chapter we will address the changing faces and personalities of the people who inhabit the universe of finance. The fundamental human-related trading that has existed for centuries has been inextricably altered by the speed of technological advances, causing ripple effects in all directions. It would be wise to take note of an observation made by physicist Albert Einstein in a letter he wrote in 1917: “Our entire much-praised technological progress, and civilization generally, could be compared to an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.”1
