Chapter 5 in Leadership Development for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice, 2014, pp 69-84 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the challenges that confront leaders in healthcare and education, especially in relation to improvement and achieving collaborative patient-centered care. Two case studies illustrate the impact existing challenges place on patients and staff. The value of leaders and organizations using a Strength-based Leadership (SBL) approach (see Chapter 4) for developing interprofessional teams is discussed, especially in relation to steering the development of safety and improvement protocols, including the World Health Organization’s (WHO) surgical safety checklist. Throughout, questions are provided with guidance for leaders on how to apply this approach to their own work settings. Key messages for sustainabil- ity of interprofessional collaborative practice for improvement and increased patient safety conclude the chapter.
