Abstract: Abstract It was not only Vladimir Lenin, Nikolai Bukharin, and Leon Trotsky who shared the Utopian collectivist dream. Utopian collectivism has been alluring to many; through art and literature it often comes across as a powerfully felt emotion more than a well-thought-out theory. The attempt to implement the system affected countless millions of lives in the twentieth century, not only in Russia but across the world. It is enticing to imagine that people can overcome the limits of the marketplace and its vices, to imagine that the harnessing of the virtues of the human spirit together with its rationality through social bonds, instead of competition, can free society from the monetary greed and inequality of the old ways. It was to be the end of history. It would be the people taking control of their lives for once, together in unity and a true humanity, and producing a finale in social history.
