Introduction

Ben Simpfendorfer

A chapter in The Rise of the New East, 2014, pp 1-6 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Take a look at the East: it is changing fast. Not only is the region growing, it is also evolving in unexpected ways: Chinese shoppers are going online to buy clothing and shoes at rates unheard of in America or Europe; American film studios are producing films alongside local partners in Hindi and Tamil; Hong Kong jewelry companies are opening more stores in a single country than the high-end American jeweler Tiffany & Co. operates globally; foreign retail multinationals are switching from hypermarkets to small-format stores as they chase Thailand’s upcountry shoppers.
