Abstract:
Abstract I don’t think I have ever attended a CSR conference that has dealt with the issue of corporate, civil society, or governmental power. Perhaps I simply missed the invitation email. However, no serious discussion on social license can be advanced without an evaluation of what imbalances of power between different state and non-state actors mean in social contract terms. Some organizations are clearly more powerful than others—either in real terms or in perceptual terms, or both. This chapter can make only a very superficial excursion into the subject but will address the issue of how imbalances of power might be tackled through interventions such as the acquisition of knowledge, participation, transparency, and accountability.
