The Value of Broadening Our Mindset

Joan Marques

Chapter 8 in Leadership and Mindful Behavior, 2014, pp 125-144 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract If you stand in one place and look at the horizon, it can be fascinating for a while. However, if you stand in that same spot long enough, chances are you’ll become bored looking at that same view all the time. Human beings are fascinating creatures: On one hand, we are creatures of habit and dread change, especially if it requires effort—but we get bored by tediousness as well and crave expansion. This craving for expansion may be more intense in some than in others, but it is in all of us. Unless there is variation in our viewpoint, we become bored sooner or later.
