Chapter Chapter 3 in Collective Myopia in Japanese Organizations, 2015, pp 33-49 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In order to explain the mechanisms of generating and maintaining the condition of collective myopia, I need to set the levels of analyses. Being collective means “done by people acting as a group, or taken as a whole” (Oxford English Dictionary 2003, 339). It also has a Latin root of collectivus meaning “gathered together” (Oxford English Dictionary 2003, 339). Therefore, being collective implies additive mechanisms from a single individual to plural individuals of groups, from groups to organizations, from organizations to associations or institutions, and from institutions to societies as a whole. According to these additive logics, it is possible to expand the analysis from individual myopia to organizational myopia, from organizational myopia to institutional myopia, and from institutional myopia to societal myopia. Figure 3.1 illustrates the analytical logic.
