Abstract:
Abstract In Chapter 4, Kevin McKague, Melissa Menke, and Ajanthy Arasaratnam provide an in-depth case study of Access Afya, a micro-clinic health franchise designed for scale from the very beginning. This chapter is co-authored by the founder of Access Afya. The case of Access Afya reveals the importance of planning and designing for scale in the earliest stages of a microfranchise’s development. The organization emphasizes depth of understanding of its business model and customers, and perfecting key processes early on, thus creating a solid foundation for replication. Many health microfranchises stay small or rely on ongoing subsidies. The path to financial sustainability is reliance on scale, and reachingscale is more easily achieved if it is considered up-front in the design phase of an enterprise, while it is small and agile.
