A Phantom Energy Empire: The Failure of Gazprom’s Downstream Integration

Andrey Vavilov and Georgy Trofimov

Chapter 3 in Gazprom, 2015, pp 72-104 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The opening of the gas trade between Europe and Asia in the 1970s laid the groundwork for long-term international cooperation between Europe and Russia in the energy sphere. In the 1960s, vast gas reserves had been discovered in West Siberia, at the same time the western European countries’ demand for natural gas as a clean and cheap source of energy began a period of rapid growth. Matching potential supply and demand was highly desirable, but required the creation of an integrated cross-border chain of gas production and transportation.
