Chapter Chapter 1 in Learning Leadership in a Changing World, 2014, pp 3-13 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract It was the decade of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, Oprah and Tiger, Jack Welch and General Schwarzkopf. It was a time of unparalleled economic growth. The Dow began the decade at 2,810.15. It broke through the 10,000 mark on March 29, 1999, and ended the decade at 11, 497.12. The Nasdaq Composite broke through the 3,000 mark on November 3, 1999, and ended the decade at 4,069.31. Unemployment reached a 30-year low. The Soviet Union went out of business, and the prospect of a New World Order was tantalizingly within reach. The World Wide Web was born. The Human Genome Project and e-commerce were launched. Flat panel TVs, DVRs, and MP3 players entered our homes, over half of which owned a computer.
