The Mess: Say Hello to the New Normal

Chapter Chapter 2 in Learning Leadership in a Changing World, 2014, pp 15-23 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In the second decade of the twenty-first century, the Old Normal narrative and its supporting myths have fallen on hard times. A new version of “normal”—a New Normal—is fast arriving, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The idea of a “New Normal” describes a series of social, economic, and cultural sea changes, a confluence of extreme events, the cumulative effect of which is to create a fundamentally new leadership landscape full of disruptive threats, discontinuous change, and stomach-turning twists and turns. Although disruptive change has been with us for millennia, it has reached unprecedented levels in the twenty-first century, increasing dramatically in scope and intensity, rendering organizations vulnerable to forces outside their control.
