Abstract: Abstract While effective L eaders and member-leaders manifest a wide range of attitudes and behaviors, the same stable core configuration of cognitive, moral, and emotional capacity sustains leadership performance in the New Normal. The list of necessary qualities that support New Normal next practices is remarkably short—a sense of larger purpose, wisdom, humility, integrity, courage, and emotional maturity. This suite of capacities goes by a variety of names in the leadership literature— substance, character, and inner strength. Contemporary authors note that effective leaders manifest “fierce resolve” and “humility” (Collins, 2001), “moral courage” (Kidder, 2006), “psychological presence” (Kahn, 1992, p. 322), and “integrity” and “character” (Cloud, 2006).
