Introduction

Emer Smyth

Chapter Chapter 1 in Students' Experiences and Perspectives on Secondary Education, 2016, pp 1-26 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Smyth locates a mixed methods longitudinal study of student experiences in Irish secondary education within the context of previous research. She focuses in particular on research that emphasises the student voice and theories which seek to explain educational inequality. Both rational choice and socio-cultural reproduction frameworks tend to neglect the role of school context in shaping educational decision-making. Instead, Smyth emphasises the need to take account of school climate, with young people having ‘bounded agency’ within this context. The chapter argues for the importance of student voice and discusses the way young people’s experiences are captured in the study.
