The Paradox of Military Leadership

Tim Kane

Chapter Chapter 2 in Bleeding Talent, 2012, pp 35-58 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract THIS MAY SURPRISE YOU. THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA has a population of 9.38 million people, roughly 3 percent of the US population, but 9 percent of CEOs of US companies are from North Carolina. This fact is so statistically odd that it can’t be mere coincidence. Something about the Tarheel state produces highly savvy business leaders. Maybe it’s a conservative culture, or Baptist values, or the mix of excellent universities in the fabled Research Triangle region. The corporate boards of America have noticed, and they keep a close eye on young executives from the state.
