Chapter 3 in Managing FDI for Development in Resource-Rich States, 2015, pp 35-60 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Chapter 2 discussed the FDI-facilitated development occurring in the bauxite industry of selected CARICOM countries. Since bauxite is the raw material that is used to make aluminium, this chapter focuses on the aluminium industry. It attempts to analyse the structure and dynamics of the international aluminum industry. The examination of the international aluminium industry will be done using the value chain framework. The value chain describes ‘the full range of activities that is required to bring a product from its conception, through its design, its sourced raw material and intermediate inputs, its marketing, its distribution and its support to the final consumer’ (Kaplinsky 1996, p. 13).
