Abstract Economic aspects of knowledge have become increasingly important in the era of globalization and international competition on the one hand and in the context of financial austerity on the other hand. In a rather complicated environment of slowing economic growth, a rapidly aging population and increased unemployment, European universities are seen as engines of economic development and problem solving.
