Chapter 5 in Innovation and the Multinational Firm: Perspectives on Foreign Subsidiaries and Host Locations, 2015, pp 105-123 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter integrates IB, IS and EG perspectives to propose a comprehensive framework for the study of geographical dispersal of R&D activities within MNCs. Such analytical framework suggests accounting not only for the micro-level of MNC headquarters and the macro-level of home/host countries, but also for the more fine-grained micro-level of MNC subsidiaries and the meso-level of sub-national host locations, such as clusters. Tis approach has the potential to enrich the investigation into geographically dispersed R&D activities through an accurate account of actors and conditions that are more directly involved into decentralized processes of innovation. The chapter concludes by applying the proposed framework to the topic of FDI knowledge spillovers to host locations.
