Enron: Launch to Boom and Bust, 1985–2001

Alicia Micklethwait and Patricia Dimond

Chapter 2 in Driven to the Brink, 2017, pp 15-38 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract At the end of 2000 the world became better acquainted with Enron, a once unknown energy firm from Texas, when it became one of the largest companies on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), with a market capitalisation of $60 billion and a stock market price of 70 times earnings. However, the company’s success was short lived. By December 2001 it had filed for bankruptcy protection, fired thousands of employees, whose pensions and life savings were lost, and headlines around the world were screaming fraud.
