Gas

Chapter 4 in British Nationalisation 1945–1973, 1973, pp 55-66 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The history of the nationalised gas industry falls into two distinct periods. In the first, from May 1949 to about 1960, the industry was making little headway. Since 1960 it has undergone two revolutions and is rapidly changing its outlook and character; indeed, the shape of the gas industry in the 1970s is perhaps the most fascinating problem in the whole field of energy in Britain. This chapter therefore will start by describing the first twelve years. The second part will deal with the revolutionary changes in the sixties and seventies.
