Chapter 8 in International Banking and Finance, 1974, pp 193-235 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter we examine the role and importance of foreign lending by American banks. American banks are not the only source of short-term or long-term credits for non-resident borrowers. However, the role of U.S. banks is strategic, since they provide a major part of the credits to foreign borrowers that finance U.S. exports and imports, investment transactions, and foreign business development. Foreign loans provided by U.S. banks may serve to bolster the U.S. balance of payments position and facilitate a broad spectrum of international transactions carried on by U.S. residents.
