A Generalised Model of the Open Socio-technical System

Allan Warmington, Tom Lupton and Cecily Gribbin

Chapter 8 in Organizational Behaviour and Performance, 1977, pp 155-168 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract We have suggested in part II that open socio-technical systems analysis of particular production systems can provide an understanding of the patterns of behaviour in the system and of the causes of that behaviour. We have also implied that this understanding could provide a basis for a programme of departmental improvement. A socio-technical model of a department would suggest some of the consequences likely to arise as a result of change, whether that change is planned or is imposed by changes in product or resource markets, or characteristics of people or control systems. However the patterns of causation in many apparently small and simple production departments are much more complex than is frequently asserted, and considerable skill and expenditure of time and effort is needed to make a satisfactory prognosis in socio-technical terms.
