Abstract: Abstract We have commented on the ‘invisibility’ of the social problematic of Bolshevism for most marxists. Central to their blindness is, we believe, their imprisonment within the boundaries of the Bolsheviks’ own debates of the 1920s and 1930s, particularly that between Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin. Those debates have also left another legacy, which is of particular concern to us here. The works of Lenin — both practical and theoretical — are conventionally treated, by all major protagonists and their ideological heirs, merely as a resource for ‘proving’ the legitimacy of their respective positions. The corollary of this elevation of Lenin’s work into an authoritative body of canon law is one crucial to our central theme: the struggles within Lenin’s work, far from being examined, are suppressed in favour of an imposed and thoroughly artificial consistency.
