Towards the Conference

Armand Dormael

Chapter 14 in Bretton Woods, 1978, pp 139-155 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Morgenthau had taken unusual care to interest the press in the recommendations of the monetary experts. On 20 April, the day before the release of the Statement of Principles, he held a lengthy press conference on the subject, and discussed the matter freely and with exceptional frankness, both on and off the record. ‘Harry White was there … and when Morgenthau seemed if anything slightly more muddled over the recommendations than his questioners White was appealed to or intervened tactfully without being asked. On one occasion Morgenthau after being corrected, gently remarked “see what a polite assistant I have”.’1
