Abstract: Abstract The past two decades have seen the British gas industry evolve from a minor position as a manufacturer of gas into a major nationwide distributor with a significant share of the energy market. The success of what is arguably the most rapidly growing industry in Britain rests substantially on the development of several alternatives to the traditional coal carbonisation process, the mainstay of the gas industry from the late eighteenth century until the mid-1960s.
