The GNP and Foreign Trade

Jaroslav Krejčí

Chapter 5 in National Income and Outlay in Czechoslovakia, Poland and Yugoslavia, 1982, pp 56-63 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract It was pointed out in Chapter 1 that the degree of dependence on foreign trade is one of the circumstances dictated by the state of natural resources, the size of the economy and the level of its development. In this context, we shall be dealing with the external economic relationship as revealed by aggregate analysis. As far as Czechoslovakia is concerned, I refer to my article on the measurement of aggregate efficiency in the Czechoslovak economy (Soviet Studies, 1974). The second part of that article was devoted to the establishment of a relationship between the exchange and domestic currency units (korunas) and the resulting terms of trade. Unfortunately, the series calculated in that article can be extended even now by only three years because the publication of foreign trade data in domestic currency was stopped after 1975. Yet in a somewhat different price evaluation, those data can be inferred from the input/output tables published with three-to four-year intervals (Table 5.1).
