Chapter 5 in The Hidden Meaning of Pay Conflict, 1981, pp 48-61 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The theories presented in the previous chapters have been of two kinds. They have been partly formal or structural—saying something about the way in which systems of attitudes are organised. And they have been partly substantive—making predictions about which aspects of a situation will be more important or less important in explaining various attitudes towards pay and conflict. In the present chapter, I describe a set of methods which enable these theories to be tested in a reasonably systematic and integrated manner. It combines statistical analysis of survey data with qualitative description of particular organisational situations, and I call it the ‘case-survey method’.
