Alternatives in Development
Paul Streeten
Chapter 7 in Development Perspectives, 1981, pp 140-147 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract My daughter uses a Directory of Alternative Work. This poorly duplicated document used to be called rather more attractively Uncareers and “is about the idea that you may be able to do something full time (or at least most of the time) that you want to do, that you enjoy, and see some purpose in. Things you can do, rather than what you can get a job as!” We also hear of the “alternative society”, “alternative cultures” and “alternative lifestyles”. Some advocate the legalization for alternative forms of marriage, like group marriage. The Vienna Institute of Development has a programme called “Alternatives in Development”.1
