Direct Investment

Peter J. Buckley and Brian R. Roberts

Chapter 1 in European Direct Investment in the U.S.A. before World War I, 1982, pp 1-10 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This book examines European direct investment in the United States of America (U.S.A.) in the period before World War I.* Our concerns are to examine the extent and nature of such investment; to assess the impact the investment had on the development of the economy of the U.S.A. and to provide explanations of this early direct investment in the light of the modern theories of international business. Our major concern is manufacturing industry but we shall also follow European capital into agriculture, extraction and mining, and service industries such as insurance and banking. No attempt is made to assess the impact of such investment on the source economies.
