Abstract: Abstract In 1830 Longman’s published a volume entitled Essays on Political Economy: in which are illustrated The Principal Causes of the Present National Distress; with Appropriate Remedies. There are fifteen essays in all, as well as a preliminary discussion and a conclusion. They are: 1. On the motives to industry 2. On security of property 3. On improvements in the productive powers of labour 4. On currency in general, and particularly coin 5. On paper currency 6. On the importation and exportation of gold and silver 7. On variations in the value of gold and silver 8. On the origin and increase of capital 9. On the employment of capital generally, its division and value 10. On the different employments of capital 11. On the employment of capital in agriculture, mines, and fisheries 12. On the employment of capital in manufactures 13. On the employment of capital in commerce 14. On mercantile shipping 15. On supply and demand
