Cameron Chapter 3 in Economics in the Long View, 1982, pp 27-43 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract Rostow informs us that as an undergraduate at Yale in the 1930s he decided ‘to work professionally on two problems: the relatively narrow problem of bringing modern economic theory to bear on economic history; and the broader problem of relating economic to social and political forces, in the workings of whole societies.’1 Throughout his long, varied, and distinguished career as a teacher, scholar, and public servant he has with remarkable single-minded-ness adhered to that youthful decision. Readers may therefore find it surprising that in an essay devoted precisely to those two problems, and in a volume honouring Rostow, I should have referred only in passing to a small portion of the large corpus of his scholarly writing. The omission is deliberate. In the first place, I have already commented in print on two of his most celebrated works.2 More importantly, I have thought it useful to demonstrate another, independent approach to the problems that have preoccupied him. If that be Hamlet without the prince, I can only say mea culpa.
