The Structure of Industrial Earnings in Seven West European Countries

Abstract: Abstract This paper examines some aspects of the structure of the earnings of full-time industrial employees in France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom. The information relating to the first six countries, the original member countries of the European Economic Community, is largely derived from a great survey of industrial earnings in October 1972 conducted by the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) and published by that organisation in 13 large volumes during 1975 to 1977. The data were collected using a standardised procedure in all the countries, so that comparisons between countries can be made with much more confidence that like is being compared with like than is usually the case in international comparisons.
