Abstract ‘Two generations ago, the banana was a luxury; oranges were seasonal fruit only; the use of tobacco was far less; a century ago tea and coffee were luxuries for the rich alone, and cocoa unknown. Today, bananas, oranges all year round, tea, coffee and cocoa in the humblest domestic budget in North America and Great Britain… Man and beast are fed increasingly from tropical countries.
