The Role of Forecasting

K. J. Wigley

Chapter 9 in Strategic Planning in Nationalised Industries, 1984, pp 180-190 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter discusses relationships between forecasting, strategic planning and decision-taking. No attempt has been made to provide a detailed catalogue of alternative forecasting techniques as this is a subject which already has a substantial literature. However, a number of different approaches to forecasting are discussed and reference is made to experience gained in preparing Energy Projections 1982, included as an Annex to the Department’s Proof of Evidence to the Sizewell ‘B’ Inquiry.1 Forecasting methods used in the nationalised gas and electricity industries have been described recently by F. K. Lyness,2 and J. M. W. Rhys.3
