Capacity Utilisation and Below-Capacity Working

John Dewhurst ()

Chapter 3 in Working Below Capacity, 1987, pp 45-57 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is concerned with the construction of indices of capacity utilisation from data collected from surveys of firms. In particular, we are concerned with the responses to questions asking whether firms are operating at full capacity. This type of data is collected in various countries and for the empirical part of this chapter we use two sources—data collected by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) for manufacturing industry in Scotland and data published by the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE) for French industry. A more thorough description of this type of data is contained in Christiano (1981).
