Abstract: Abstract South Korea has been described as a ‘self-made’ miracle (Woronoff, 1983) in terms of its economic recovery over the last decade. The ‘miracle’ has significance far beyond the changes wrought in the lives of its own population and the example and challenge to other developing countries, extended in the area of high technology to Western countries. Its geographical situation in the Far East gives it a key position in a struggle for ideological supremacy between the United States backed by its allies, and its communist neighbours. Its relationships with the latter, including North Korea, and other Pacific region states, including Japan, are highly relevant to world peace and global defensive strategies.
