Training the Corporate Directors

Chapter 9 in Membership of the Board of Directors, 1988, pp 184-198 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract If success is what happens when preparation meets opportunity, then it is a self-evident truth that the board members should be trained. Even the best-run companies can experience trouble in periods of rapid expansion and in times of profound technical change. The number one priority today is more education of the users of high technology tools and, as well, of the decision-makers. As end-users become more educated, they call for integrated, generic systems that allow them to magnify the value of their time. This is most important for members of the board. Many companies have set their sights on establishing an edge in high technology. This requires preconditions: one is the ability to appreciate the role of technology in a changing business context; another is managing within a constantly changing external environment — successfully confronting changing markets and new competitors. Still another prerequisite is computer literacy.
