Abstract: Abstract During the 1970s and 1980s private banks made a very significant contribution to financing the balance of payments deficits of certain developing and other countries. However, as the figures in Table 2.1 reveal, following the debt difficulties of 1982 the banks have been endeavouring to extricate themselves from such lending.
