Abstract: Abstract This chapter aims to review approaches to the management of psychological stress at work, with particular reference to the public sector caring services. By ‘caring services’ are meant all those public sector occupations which place individuals in a caring role towards others — those working in health, education, and social and community services. The emphasis in this chapter is on stress management, not on defining sources of stress, about which there is already a considerable literature (Fineman, 1985; Payne and Firth-Cozens, 1987; Johnstone, 1989).
