Performances, Interactions and Evolution in the Theory of Industrial Organization

Giovanni Dosi

Chapter 2 in Recent Developments in the Theory of Industrial Organization, 1992, pp 34-57 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract I can think of two ways of introducing the reflections that follow on the achievements, limitations and promises of current theories of industrial organization. One is with reference to some major empirical phenomena that economic theories of industrial organization have addressed (or, in some cases, ought to address). Another one refers to the actual developments of industrial economics, in particular in the post-war period. This contribution is not intended by any means as a survey: rather, I am simply going to present some reflections on the current ‘state of the art’, in a perspective which, surely, many practitioners of the field will consider as somewhat biased toward ‘evolutionary’ and ‘institutionalist’ themes. (For more general surveys and modelling attempts, with a variety of interpretative approaches, see Schmalensee (1988), Stiglitz and Mathewson (1986), Jacquemin (1987), Scherer (1980), Kreps and Spence (1986), Tirole (1988), Schmalensee and Willig (1989), and Kreps (1990).2
