Abstract:
Abstract Whereas the people of Okinawa call Honshu ‘the mainland’, Japanese people living in Hokkaido usually call it ‘the homeland’. This is because, unlike Okinawa, most of the inhabitants of Hokkaido, which is the Northernmost of Japan’s four main islands (see Map 7.1), are the descendants of immigrants from Honshu.1
