Abstract:
Abstract In an area of 1052 square kilometers, Hong Kong supports a population of 5.6 million. Its population declined from 1.6 million in 1935 to 600 000 in 1945 but increased rapidly afterwards as several waves of immigrants came to Hong Kong from China. Sovereignty over Hong Kong will be transferred from Britain to China on July 1, 1997.
