Abstract: Abstract Occupying an area of 98 000 square kilometers, Korea (the Republic of Korea, or South Korea) has a population of 42.1 million. It has few mineral resources and its mountainous terrain does not favor agriculture which, nevertheless, was the mainstay of its economy until independence from Japan in 1945.
