Abstract: Abstract In an area of 514 000 square kilometers, Thailand has a population of 52.6 million. It is characterized by considerable ethnic and cultural homogeneity. Among ethnic minorities Malays account for 3 percent of the population, while Chinese have a share of 7–8 percent but are increasingly assimilated in the Thai population.
