Abstract:
Abstract This chapter synthesises several strands of theory which centre on the internal organisation of multinational enterprises. We begin by providing the conceptual framework for this discussion by concentrating on the internalisation approach and the relevance of transaction cost economics for the organisation of multinational firms. After an examination of the literature on the organisation of multinational firms in the light of the transactions cost framework, we then introduce the related, but distinct, internationalisation and globalisation views of the dynamics of the growth of multinational firms. Finally, the interplay of market forces and organisational structure is assessed, and the role of cultural and national influences is analysed, before the various threads in the body of the chapter are drawn together in the conclusion.
