‘Competition’: A New Entry in the Regulators’ Dictionary?

Markus Lusser

Chapter 8 in Financial Strategies and Public Policies, 1993, pp 56-60 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In 1990, the eyes of the whole world were on the monetary and political reunification of the two Germanies. Almost nobody, however, has taken any notice of the linguistic reunification currently under way. The ‘Bible’ of the German language is a dictionary called Duden’. Needless to say, for the past forty years this work has existed in two versions — one for the East and one for the West. The two versions are now being integrated. The East German contribution includes a stock of expressions used in a planned economy that I would not dare translate into English. At the same time, it reveals some striking gaps. One such omission is the word Weltreise, or world tour. From this it can be concluded that mobility used to be frowned on. Mobility opens up new vistas and options; it exposes authorities to competition. thus restricting their room for manoeuvre.
