Chapter 10 in Plant Here The Standard, 1996, pp 141-152 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The Standard was now a power in the land; everywhere it was regarded as being the oracle of the propertied and the mercantile classes. It was the exponent of solid Conservative respectability, and was said to represent the thoughts of the ‘villa resident’ order of Englishmen. Mudford’s touch was sure, and he was constantly being supplied with Cabinet information, much to the chagrin of the Daily News, the official Liberal paper.
