Abstract: Abstract Both the Japanese economy and the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy have exhibited large swings over the last two decades. This chapter summarizes some of the key features of the experience and attempts to draw lessons from it for the conduct of monetary policy, especially regarding the rules versus discretion debate.
