Ideas and their Implementation

Nick Gardner

Chapter 1 in A Guide to United Kingdom and European Union Competition Policy, 1996, pp 3-23 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This book is intended as a practical guide to the way in which competition policy works in Britain. It is written for businessmen, not for lawyers. Its summary of the legislative framework is designed for ease of reference, and the reader must look elsewhere for detailed textual analyses of the statutes. Its focus is the regulatory treatment of business conduct, most of which is determined primarily by organisational, procedural and philosophical influences rather than by matters of legal interpretation. Interpretations of the law by the Restrictive Practices Court are dealt with only to the extent needed for a broad understanding of their present impact upon business conduct: other writers have dealt comprehensively with that branch of competition law. In other respects, however, the book attempts a more comprehensive and more accessible coverage than has hitherto been available.
