Trading Off Investment for Exports: African Adjustment Experiences
Jean-Marc Fontaine
Chapter 7 in Financial Fragility, Debt and Economic Reforms, 1996, pp 133-152 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the results of structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the last 10 years. It emphasises the poor performance of investment in countries subjected to adjustment policies. It relates, in particular, the behaviour of investment both to domestic components of structural adjustment policies and to the strategic outward orientation which these policies purport to implement.
