Chapter 4 in Technology and Enterprise Development, 1994, pp 61-108 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The development of TCs is based on the interaction of physical capital (equipment) and human capital (skill recruitment and training, combined with technological effort), driven by entrepreneurial responses to product and factor market conditions. Only some of these variables can be captured in an analysis of the quantitative data obtained in the panel sample. This chapter analyses information for the 164 panel firms on capital-labour ratios, the stock of human capital and investment patterns between 1983 and 1991. This analysis gives a number of insights into technology development in Ghanaian manufacturing, a valuable supplement to the detailed firm-level examination of the case studies of the 32 firms reviewed in the next part of the book.
